Overview
I set up and manage my own Microsoft 365 tenant as a personal project which is used within the family. This gives me hands-on experience outside of work to further build my skills.
It’s an ongoing environment where I test new features, improve my skills, and practice real-world IT scenarios.
Goals
- Use our custom domain
- Configure conditional access - e.g. for location based access, blocking legacy auth etc
- Implement security best practices like enforcing MFA and anti-spam policies, disabled phone number auth.
- Practice tenant administration, license management, and user setup
What I Did
- Created Users, assigned Business Premium Licenses
- Configured MFA, Disabled Security Baselines and created some conditional access polices. Checked anti-spam policy settings
- Migrated Emails from our old web mail to 365, changed DNS records on Domain to point to 365.
- Built a few SharePoint sites for photos and documents
- Enrolled Devices into intune - created some configuration polices to higher secure score and manage a few apps. Enforced bitlocker and created polices to ensure firewall/defender is enabled.
- Created Compliance Policy
- Made a dedicated workstation admin account, ensured all accounts are standard users.

Outcome
Running my own Microsoft 365 tenant has given me real experience in tenant administration alongside my experience at work, user lifecycle management, and cloud security.
